Somerset is not included in National Grid
plans to bury power cables

The National Grid has announced plans to bury cables underground rather than build pylons in areas of natural beauty but the Somerset levels are not included.

It is much more expensive to bury cables but there has been intense opposition to the ‘super’ pylons which are planned to take power from Hinkley Point to the grid at Avonmouth.

The National Grid have employed a ‘consultant’ to identify the ugliest overhead power lines in the country who has short listed eight sites – not including the pylons to Hinkley Point.

The National Grid has provided £500 million to bury, screen or re-route high voltage cables.

The money will, of course, ultimately come from the bill paying public. The selected sites include the New Forest, Brecon Beacons, the Peak District, Snowdonia, the High Weald, the North Wessex Downs, and the Tamar Valley.
