National Grid has announced plans to bury cables
underground rather than build pylons in areas of
natural beauty but the Somerset levels are not
is much more expensive to bury cables but there has been intense
opposition to the ‘super’ pylons which
are planned to take power from Hinkley Point to the grid at Avonmouth.
National Grid have employed a ‘consultant’ to identify
the ugliest overhead power lines in the country who has short listed
eight sites – not including the pylons to Hinkley Point.
National Grid has provided £500 million to bury, screen or
re-route high voltage cables.
money will, of course, ultimately come from the bill paying public.
The selected sites include the New Forest, Brecon Beacons, the Peak
District, Snowdonia, the High Weald, the North Wessex Downs, and
the Tamar Valley.
