An
apple a day can still keep the doctor away says
the British Medical Journal
If
every over-50 obeyed the Victorian dictum of eating an apple every
day 8,500 deaths from strokes and heart attacks would be avoided
according to research from Oxford University published in the British
Medical Journal (BMJ) published this month.
Apples
are a well known source of natural antioxidants and chemical compounds
called flavanoids. Both antioxidants
and flavanoids are richer in cider apples than dessert of culinary
apples and are present in naturally fermented Somerset Cider
Vinegar.
The
Oxford research concludes that apples have a similar boost to cardiovascular
health as drugs like statins (which can cause uncomfortable side
effects for some).
Two
thirds of us are not eating the recommended five portions of fruit
and veg every day and the report estimates that if adults of all
ages ate one more portion 11,000 vascular deaths would be avoided.
