Somerset
Cider Vinegar is packed in containers made from High
Density Polyethylene (HDPE). HDPE is the highest specification
(and the most expensive) plastic used for food packaging. It is
leech resistant and it is safe to store your cider vinegar in these
containers.
There
has been considerable concern in the press recently about the storage
of food products in plastics that have been manufactured using a
chemical called Bisphenol A (BPA).
BPA is used
to make plastic containers from polycarbonates which are cheaper
to manufacture.
Very small amounts
of BPA have been found to transfer from plastic packaging into foods
like fruit juices. The government is convinced that there is no
health concern from these small quantities of BPA but there has
been criticism from some quarters.
Detractors say
that chemicals like BPA interact with the human hormone systems;
they are called 'endocrine disrupters'. There is some evidence that
some wildlife has been affected by accidental contact with endocrine
disrupters. Our advice would be to stick to our High Density Polyethylene
containers or decant Somerset Cider Vinegar into glass containers.
