A mild
spring and autumn, combined with a warm and moderate rainfall have
resulted in a bumper cider apple harvest for many
Somerset growers. Traditional varieties of Somerset
cider apples like Kingston Black, Dabinett and
Chisel Jersey have done particularly well at West
Croft farm, Brent Knoll.
The
nature of cider apple trees is that there cropping
becomes increasingly biennial with age – but this year is
definitely ‘on’ in Brent Knoll.
Not
only is the fruit plentiful it is of excellent quality and with
pressing now well underway this years juice will make superb Somerset
Cider Vinegar in three years time.
Excellent
growing conditions have meant that organic growers,
like us, have had far fewer problems to contend with.
